Interview

1. What are the foundations of your research (Art Identity)?
My research stems from the desire to create an image that goes beyond what you see, to what is there. Seizing sudden motivations I aspire to fix the movement and the tempo for restore wonder and emotion. I shoot for an almost physical need, both internal and external, in search of satisfaction, communication and aesthetics. I'm interested in photography that tells a story, that makes you think and that allows you to dream.
2. Who are the artists who have guided you in your research?
The artists who most impressed and inspired me are: Giuseppe Palanti, my grandfather, painter in Milan between Scapigliatura and Novecento. Henri Matisse, master in using light and colors in an expressive function. Mark Rotchko, rigorous and imperfect abstract expressionist. Richard Long, sculptor and photographer, supreme Land Art artist. My teachers have been: Giulio Confalonieri, one of the most significant designers, master of aesthetics and life, John Goodman, American from Boston, photographer, artist and great communicator.
3. Define yourself as a human being using three adjectives.
An adjective would belittle reality. Better to go red while looking than green without looking.
4. According to your vision, where is contemporary art going and where would you like it to go?
On 11 September 2001, in the early afternoon, I was chatting with Sergio, a renowned gallerist based in Corso Monforte in Milan, when suddenly Luigi, the doorman, arrived out of breath yelling to turn on the television immediately. We were all amazed and Sergio said: "The world, the world of Art is over"; in part he was right, that world there no longer exists. But the world and Art are not finished and Art goes where it wants; I imagine myself towards an unimaginable distant point.

TWO WORDS ABOUT HIS WORKS

Edoardo Romagnoli lives and works in Milan.

At the age of eight he received a small Ferrania as a gift from family friends; at that moment his passion is drawing and painting and so it will be for another ten years. At eighteen he bought his first Nikon F, and began to photograph during his first important trip: in 1972, two months in Scandinavia, halfway to the North Cape. Travels to Europe, Africa and North America will follow between 1972 and 1977.
More than ten months lived in a tent, many different travel companions. 70,000 km travelled.
From the end of the 1980s he discovered that he could paint with a camera and he became more aware of his own expressive research.
His masters are: Giulio Confalonieri, one of the most significant designers, master of aesthetics and life; John Goodman, photographer, artist and great communicator.
The first photo of the moon dates back to 1988 and represents the beginning of his best known work of artistic research. His first personal exhibition was held in 1991 at "Il Diaframma" by Lanfranco Colombo. The moon is the subject of tireless observation; Romagnoli makes it the protagonist of his long experiments, renewing the original charm that captivates him with each shot. The work aimed at the moon is in constant development and deepens over time as an increasingly close dialogue, without ever dwelling on the results obtained. All the photographs are taken in a single shot, moving the camera and without post-production interventions.
Large series are dedicated to architecture and graphic composition: “Duomo di Milano”, “Central Station”, “NY”, “Palazzo Lombardia”, exhibited at the Italian Cultural Institute in Buenos Aires in 2015, “Cantiere Mantegna ”, “Torre Velasca 2016”, “New Year's in London”, “Sabbia” and “Alberi”.

The book "Ulivi" of 2002 deals with the concept of time and analyzes its developments throughout an entire year; later in the book "999", text by Roberto Mutti, imprisoned time explodes in 15 minutes of thunder and flashes to announce the arrival of the new millennium.
In 2005 he took part in the group show "The Masters of Photography" at the Guggenheim in Venice.
Other works are also dedicated to the idea of movement: the “Le Corse” project, in which the artist uses movement to distract the photographic subject and capture its naturalness; the works "Alberi", "Luci d'Artista", "Duplex" and others, where movement is used to achieve a pictorial - metaphysical result.
Great attention and interest in research on the expressiveness of the body are evident in the "Autoriscatti" series exhibited at the Ravello Festival - la Follia nell'Arte in 2010, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva, "Autoscatti", "Passeggiate Lunari", " Performance”, “Portrait in a box”, “Dreams”.
In parallel with the photographic work, the research on "Doodles" develops, still drawings that arise impulsively and automatically while we do something else and constitute the original source of the work. Small creations that have always been collected by the artist that are reworked in the 90s using the photocopier and today thanks to the most modern techniques of image acquisition and transformation.
In 2009 the German publishing house Springer published the book Lune realizing an extraordinary graphic project studied in 1996 by Giulio Confalonieri
for the photos by Edoardo Romagnoli and enriched by the text of the astronomer prof. Piero Bianucci.
In 2011 he took part in the Alessandria Biennale – contemporary video photography, curated by Sabrina Raffaghello. The first "Passeggiate Lunari" are from that occasion, then re-presented at The Others in 2013.
In June 2012 the Museum of Contemporary Art of Strasbourg acquired two photographs of the Moon.
October 2014, publication of “Every generation is a bridge”, ed. Chimera Editore, historical-artistic polyphonic book on five generations of Romagnoli. Presented in Milan, at the Triennale, on November 20, 2014.
In July 2015 the MUSINF of Senigallia acquired a photograph from the Autoriscatti series.
Since October 2016 a photograph of the Torre Velasca has been hanging in the Italian Embassy in Lisbon.
The "Pittura e Disegno" leaflet created by the graphic designer Silvio Rossi in 2018 accompanies the work of the "Flowers" combined with the Moon on four exhibition occasions throughout the year.
In 2019 he published "From the Earth to the Moon", text by Roberto Mutti, Unimaginable publisher.
In July 2019, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of man's descent to the Moon, he participated in the documentary MOON, produced by SkyArte and the GHOST BOOK, Il Fotografo, NPhotography, Diners magazines dedicated extensive articles to his work on the Moon.
This year, during the lockdown due to the Coronavirus, he launched #indugiamo by collecting more than 1,200 images and texts now sorted by author on the site
www.indugiamo.it, a great and passionate choral work.
