Interview

What are the foundations of your research?
I focus my research on the relationship between light and shapes. Fundamental for me is also the research activity that underpins every new project. Particularly in landscape and architecture photography my working method requires time and patience. I explore the places of my interest by studying the possible shots and to understand which are the moments of the day with the most favorable light to create the image conceived. This means that I often have to wait many hours or go back to the place several times to have the ideal shooting conditions, which I achieve using long exposure times.
Who are the artists who have guided you in your research?
I am inspired by great masters of photography such as Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Sebastiao Salgado, but I am also influenced in general by painting and architecture. My latest work "Arquitectonica" is for example a reflection on metaphysics in Italian rationalist and neo-rationalist architecture: I have tried to describe the static nature of timeless places, full of mystery and symbology, highlighting contrasts of lines and colors and enhancing the metaphysical relationship of the geometric elements depicted. To obtain this result, I was inspired by painters such as Giorgio De Chirico and the contemporary Giorgio Tonelli, whom I have the good fortune to know personally thanks to our collaboration with the Galleria Forni in Bologna. I am currently making a new work, which is inspired by the works and travels of the Dutch engraver Maurits Cornelis Escher to discover Italy and its villages.
Define yourself as a human being using three adjectives.
Patient, thoughtful, sensitive.
According to your vision, where is contemporary art going and where would you like it to go?
Difficult to answer this question in a few lines, I hope that in Italy in the future there will be more space for photography.

Two words about his works

Gianluca Pollini began taking photographs in the early eighties, dealing with naturalistic reportage and publishing his works in books and prestigious naturalistic and photographic magazines (such as Gente di Fotografia, Fotopratica Immagini, Tutti Fotografi, Oasis, Airone, Alp, Fotografare, Photo Italy, Live the Dolomites).
It was precisely in those years in which he began to develop his interest in landscape images, black and white film and still life, from which his first book "Fiori" was born, published by Gente di Fotografia in 2006.
He mainly works with the medium format, using the analogue medium during shooting and traditional printing on baryta paper with silver salts or giclée with carbon pigments; in recent years he then extends his research to architecture, starting to use digital machines.
Thus comes to light his latest work, "Arquitectonica", a photographic project that came to life in February 2019 as a reflection on metaphysics in Italian rationalist and neo-rationalist architecture. From this project he created the book "Arquitectonica" published by Pazzini in 2022.
From 1998 to 2008 his works were treated by Image Gallery of Daniela Facchinato, the first photographic gallery opened in Bologna.
Since 2010 his photographic works, generally printed in 10 editions + AP, have been treated by the Galleria Forni Bologna and since 2020 also by the FP ART Gallery Genoa. In 2021 he collaborated with Agora Gallery New York.
Since the nineties he has exhibited in over fifty solo and group exhibitions in various galleries, museums and contemporary art fairs, among the main ones: Galleria Forni Bologna, BAG-Bocconi Art Gallery Milan, Agora Gallery New York, Arte Fiera Bologna, Mia Photo fair Milan, The Photo Art Fair Turin, Rome Art in the cloud, Ken Damy Museum of Contemporary Photography in Brescia, Stadtmuseum Klausen, Art Karlsruhe, Itsliquid International Fair Venice, Flash Art Museum Trevi.
His works are present in some private collections
